The best website on "Herkimer Diamonds"

A breccia is basically a rock that contains broken fragments of rock that are held together my some form of rock cement.  It appears that there are several types of breccias in the Herkimer mining district.  They will continually be part of what is focussed upon.  The reason for this is because broken rock often provides nice porous channels for the migration of mineral bearing fluids.   We are asking - Did this happen in the Herkimer district?  Did broken rock guide where Herkimer diamonds were formed? Can we find photographic evidence?

Breccia Features - Broken Fragments

A public service project always open to input  from the community interested in Herkimer diamonds.

Preliminary evidence (summer 2010)  suggests that there may be at least four types of breccias: 1) Early sea level change sedimentary breccia, 2) paleokarst breccia, 3) extensional fault breccia, and 4) hydrothermal solution breccia.  Finding convincing photographic evidence remains difficult.
